It is so critical to understand what revenue cycle means in a practice and hospital system. How the right individual who runs your revenue cycle departments and teams can make or break your financial goals. So why is revenue cycle more than billing? To answer this question, you must understand the functions of revenue cycle and the functions of billing.

So what is the revenue cycle process? It’s simple; it is the entire process from start to finish. I am sure you're saying to yourself sure Cissy it’s the whole process. But it is imperative that you understand that the revenue cycle process focuses more on the operational aspects and financial improvements of the whole, not just the day to day activities of billing.  Yep, that is right I am saying it. It is more than just creating a claim, dropping a claim, follow-up and denial management. Typically, individuals who are great revenue cycle operators have operational and billing experience. Please don’t get me wrong, many people only have billing experience and do very well in revenue cycle management and vice versa. But the individual who has both make the greatest impact because they understand what changes you make in one or more areas and how it will affect the revenue cycle stream. Don't be fooled that change is unilateral; there is always a cause and effect in the revenue cycle.
